What it does

Semrush is a broad search marketing suite in the SEO tools category. Its core is keyword and competitor research: enter a domain and see the keywords it ranks for in a chosen country, estimated organic traffic, the pages that bring it, and its backlinks. Enter a keyword and see volume estimates, difficulty and the current results.

Around that core it adds project tools for your own sites (Position Tracking, Site Audit), content optimization on higher plans, and, as of October 2026, a large layer of "AI visibility" features that track how a brand appears in AI answers, per the pricing page. Reporting add-ons build scheduled PDF reports for clients.

For an affiliate in affiliate SEO, Semrush plays the same role as Ahrefs: map the competition, choose winnable keywords, and track your positions per market. As with any third-party SEO tool, traffic numbers for sites you do not own are estimates.

Who it is for

Semrush suits affiliates and small agencies who run content sites in organic search and want one tool for keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking and client reporting. In iGaming, that means review and guide sites that need to compare themselves against established portals country by country. The 7-day trial makes it easy to test the data on your own markets before paying.

It is not for media buyers working pop, push or native traffic, whose needs are an ad network, a tracker and spy tools. Someone who only wants a backlink checker for a single site may also find the suite heavier than needed, and the Free plan's 10 reports a day may be enough for occasional checks.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • A seven day free trial lets you test its data on your own markets before paying.
  • Keyword research, position tracking, audits and reporting sit in one account.

Cons

  • API data integration starts only on Advanced at $549 a month.
  • Each additional user costs from $45 a month on top of the plan.

How it works

A typical research session starts with domain overview: you enter a competitor review site, choose a country database, and see its traffic trend, top keywords and top pages. From there you open the keyword gap between your site and two or three competitors to find queries they rank for and you do not, then filter by difficulty and intent.

For your own site you create a project. Position Tracking follows a keyword list daily, with multi-location and device tracking on Pro+ per the pricing page. Site Audit crawls the site for technical issues. Higher plans add content optimization and keyword cannibalization checks, which matter on large review sites where several pages compete for the same query.

Limits are counted per plan: websites monitored, keywords tracked daily, AI prompts tracked and reports per day.

Setup effort

Setup is a signup and, for the trial, a card. Research works immediately. Projects take more time: you add each site, connect Google Search Console and Analytics if you want their data in reports, and build keyword lists per country. Learning which of the many tools you actually need is the larger time cost; most affiliate SEO work uses a handful of them.

Strengths

One suite for research, tracking and reporting. Competitor research, Position Tracking, Site Audit and client reports live in one account, which suits small agencies that report to clients.

A real trial. As of October 2026 the pricing page says "Try Semrush free for seven days", which lets you check its data on your own iGaming markets before paying.

Cannibalization and content checks. Pro+ lists keyword cannibalization analysis and content optimization on the same page, useful for large review sites with many overlapping pages.

Flexible plan changes. The FAQ on that page says you can "cancel your subscription, downgrade or upgrade your plan at any time", unless you signed custom terms.

Check volumes before trusting them. Keyword volumes for regulated gambling markets are modelled estimates, and betting queries move with the sporting calendar. During the trial, compare Semrush's figures for queries your site already ranks for with impressions in Search Console for the same country; the size of that gap tells you how much weight to give its numbers elsewhere.

Limitations

Estimates, not analytics. Traffic and volume figures for other sites are modelled. They are useful for comparison, not for revenue forecasts.

Many features, many paywalls. Historical data, content optimization and multi-location tracking start on Pro+; API data integration starts on Advanced, per the pricing page as of October 2026. Additional users start at $45 a month and reports are separate add-ons.

The suite pulls focus. Much of the current plan structure is about AI visibility and prompts. An affiliate who needs keyword and link research may pay for features they never open.

What it does not do. Semrush does not build links, write compliant gambling content, or check operator licences in your target market. It cannot tell you whether a page meets local gambling advertising rules; that is your editorial job.

The pricing FAQ has a separate question on the refund policy; read it and the terms of service before paying for a year upfront.

Pricing, in context

As of October 2026, the pricing page (where semrush.com/prices redirects) lists the "SEO + AI Search" plans: SEO at $139 a month (5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily), Starter at $199 (5 websites, 500 keywords, 50 AI prompts daily), Pro+ at $299 (15 websites, 1,500 keywords, 100 prompts) and Advanced at $549 (40 websites, 5,000 keywords, 200 prompts). Annual billing saves "up to 17%": $117.33, $165.17, $248.17 and $455.67 a month. A Free plan gives 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. Enterprise is custom.

Add-ons on the same page: additional users from $45 a month, Base Report $10 and Pro Report $20 a month. An illustrative setup for an affiliate tracking a review site in several countries with historical data is Pro+ at $299 a month, or $248.17 a month billed annually.

When to pick an alternative

Ahrefs is the direct substitute, chosen by many for its link data, but it has no trial and almost no refunds. Moz Pro is cheaper at entry and simpler, which suits a single affiliate site. A sensible way to choose is to run the same competitor and keyword checks in two tools for your own markets during a trial period, then compare both against your Search Console data, which is the only source of real numbers for your own site.

Alternatives to Semrush

  • AhrefsThe two main full SEO suites; teams compare their link and keyword data per market.
  • Moz ProSame SEO jobs; Moz Pro is lighter and cheaper, Semrush broader with reporting.

Our verdict

Semrush is a good fit for iGaming affiliates and small agencies who want keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking and client reporting in one place, and who value being able to test the data for seven days first. The entry SEO plan covers a small site; multi-country review sites usually need Pro+ for historical data, more tracked keywords and cannibalization checks.

Its weaknesses are breadth and add-on pricing: you may pay for AI visibility features you do not use, and seats and reports cost extra. Use the trial to compare its numbers for your markets against Search Console before committing.
