Privacy policy

Short version: reading this site does not set cookies, does not load advertising or analytics trackers, and we do not store your IP address. We count clicks on outbound links in a way that cannot be traced back to you.

What happens when you read a page

The site is served through Cloudflare, which protects it from attacks and delivers pages quickly. Cloudflare processes your IP address and request details to do that, as described in its own privacy policy. The site itself runs on servers operated by DigitalOcean.

We do not set cookies for readers, we do not use Google Analytics or any advertising pixel, and we do not use local storage in your browser. That is why there is no cookie banner.

What happens when you follow a link to a tool

Links to vendors go through /go/ addresses. When you follow one we record:

  • the time, the tool and the page and position the link was on;
  • the country your request came from, as reported by Cloudflare (not your IP address);
  • only the domain of the page that sent you, if it was another website;
  • the browser family and operating system family (for example "Chrome" and "Windows"), and whether the request looks automated;
  • a one-way fingerprint of your IP address and browser, made with a random value that changes every day and is then thrown away. It lets us count one person clicking twice in a day as one click. Once the day's value is gone, nobody, including us, can link the fingerprint back to an IP address or to your clicks on another day.

After 90 days we delete the fingerprint, the referring domain and the browser details from each click. What remains is an anonymous count by tool, page, position, country and day.

We use these records to understand which pages and tools are useful to readers and to reconcile commissions with affiliate programs. Our legal basis is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not sell them, share them with vendors, or combine them with other data.

What happens after you leave

The vendor's website has its own privacy policy and may set its own cookies, including an affiliate cookie that tells it you came from us. That is outside our control; please read their policy.

Backups

The database, including the click records above, is backed up every night to encrypted storage at Amazon Web Services in the United States. Backups are deleted after 90 days.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to its use. Because we do not store IP addresses or any other identifier, in practice we usually cannot find data that belongs to you, and we will tell you so. You can also complain to your data protection authority.

Editors

The site's administration area is used only by our editors. Signing in there uses Cloudflare Access with a Google account and sets the cookies needed to keep an editor signed in. None of this applies to readers.

Changes

When this policy changes, we update the date at the top of this page.
