What it does

Ahrefs is an SEO tool built around its own web crawler and the link and keyword indexes that crawler produces. You type in a domain or a URL and see which pages link to it, which keywords it ranks for in a given country, roughly how much organic traffic those rankings bring and how that changed over time. Keyword research works the other way round: you type in a topic and get search volume estimates, difficulty scores and the pages that currently rank.

Around that core sit project tools for your own sites: a site audit that crawls your pages for technical problems, a rank tracker for a fixed keyword list, and a dashboard that ties them together. Recent plans also track how brands appear in AI answers, which the pricing page lists as tracked AI prompts as of October 2026.

For an affiliate, the practical job is competitive research for affiliate SEO: finding which pages of competing review sites earn links and traffic, and which keywords are realistic for a young domain. Every number Ahrefs shows for a site you do not own is an estimate from its crawler and clickstream models, not that site's analytics.

Who it is for

Ahrefs suits affiliates who run content sites in organic search and need to understand competitors: who links to them, which pages win, and how hard a keyword is. In iGaming, where review and comparison sites compete for a small set of commercial queries per country, that competitive view is the main reason people pay for it. Agencies and in-house SEO teams working several sites also fit, because projects and tracked keywords scale by plan.

It is not for paid media buyers who send pop or push traffic and never rank pages; they need an ad network and a tracker, not a backlink index. It is also a poor fit for someone with one small site and no budget: there is no trial, and a site owner can get limited data on their own site through the free tier instead.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built on its own crawler and backlink index, the core of competitor research for review sites.
  • Per-plan limits for projects, tracked keywords and crawl credits are published on the pricing page.
  • Ahrefs Free gives website owners limited access to their own site data.

Cons

  • Ahrefs says it never runs discounts and does not refund in general, so a wrong plan choice costs money.
  • Tracked keywords and crawl credits run out fast on a site that targets many countries.
  • The pricing page describes Starter in one line and does not itemise its limits.

How it works

Most work starts in Site Explorer. You enter a competitor's domain, pick a country, and read three views: top pages by estimated organic traffic, the keywords each page ranks for, and the referring domains behind it. For an iGaming review site this quickly shows whether a competitor ranks through content depth, through a few strong links, or through link patterns that look bought.

Keywords Explorer is the second step. You collect candidate queries for one market, filter them by difficulty and intent, and see which page types rank: review, comparison, guide or operator homepage. That tells you which pages are worth writing for a site with few links.

For your own site you set up a project. Site Audit crawls it on a schedule, and Rank Tracker follows a fixed keyword list per country. Crawl volume and tracked keywords are capped per plan, so a multi-country iGaming site uses them faster than a single-market one.

Setup effort

There is nothing to install. You sign up, choose a plan, and research works immediately. Projects for your own sites take a little longer: you verify ownership (the free tier relies on this too), set crawl settings, and enter the keyword list per country you want tracked. The real effort is learning to read the estimates: knowing that traffic and volume figures are modelled, and comparing like with like across competitors rather than trusting one number.

Strengths

Link data is the core product. Ahrefs runs its own crawler, which the pricing page calls "the world's second-most active crawler" (a vendor claim), and its backlink index is central to the tool. For iGaming affiliate SEO, where links decide much of the competition for commercial queries, that is the feature you are paying for.

Competitor page view. Top pages by estimated traffic, with their keywords and links side by side, answer the practical question: which pages of a competing review site actually earn search traffic.

Clear plan boundaries. As of October 2026 the pricing page states projects, tracked keywords, crawl credits, history depth and user add-on prices for each plan, so you can budget before buying.

Free access for your own site. The same page says site owners can use Ahrefs Free for "free limited access to Site Explorer & Site Audit", which covers basic monitoring of a site you control.

Where to start in a new market. Site Explorer's top pages and organic keywords reports, filtered to the target country, show which competing review sites earn traffic and on which queries; Keywords Explorer then sizes the queries you plan to target. Treat both as estimates and check them against Search Console once your own pages are live.

Limitations

It does not show real traffic. Organic traffic and keyword volume for third-party sites are estimates. Use them to rank opportunities against each other, not to forecast revenue.

No trial and almost no refunds. The pricing FAQ says, as of October 2026: "We never run discounts" and "Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general", with a refund possible on monthly plans only if you have not used the service.

Limits bite on multi-country sites. Tracked keywords and crawl credits are fixed per plan. An iGaming site targeting several regulated markets tracks each keyword per country, so the Lite allowance goes quickly.

Extra costs add up. Additional users, pay-as-you-go credits and add-ons such as Brand Radar AI are charged on top, per the same page, and pay-as-you-go usage is charged automatically once enabled.

What it does not do. Ahrefs does not build links, write content, check whether a gambling operator is licensed in your market, or tell you whether a link pattern breaks search engine spam policies. Those judgements stay with you.

Pricing, in context

As of October 2026, the pricing page lists Lite at $129 a month (5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits, 6 months of history, 1 user), Standard at $249 (20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 500,000 crawl credits, 2 years of history) and Advanced at $449 (50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, 1,500,000 crawl credits, 5 years of history). Annual billing saves "up to 17%", which on the page works out to $107.70, $206.70 and $372.70 a month. Enterprise is $1,499 a month with an annual commitment. A Starter plan is listed at $29 a month and Ahrefs Free at no cost.

Extra users cost $40 a month on Lite, $60 on Standard and $80 on Advanced. An illustrative two-person freelance setup on Standard with monthly billing is $249 plus $60, or $309 a month before any add-ons.

The pricing page describes the $29 Starter plan in one line, "See what people search and spy on competitors", and does not itemise its limits, so check what it includes before relying on it.

When to pick an alternative

Semrush is the closest substitute and adds a broader marketing suite, with a 7-day trial that Ahrefs does not offer. Moz Pro is cheaper at entry and suits smaller sites that mainly need rank tracking, audits and a link view. All three cover the same jobs in affiliate SEO; the choice usually comes down to which link and keyword data you trust for your markets, and the price of the plan whose limits you actually need.

Alternatives to Ahrefs

  • Moz ProSame SEO jobs; Moz Pro is cheaper to start, Ahrefs has larger research allowances.
  • SemrushThe two main full SEO suites; teams compare their link and keyword data per market.

Our verdict

Ahrefs is a strong choice for an iGaming affiliate whose business is ranking review and comparison pages, especially when competition is decided by links. Its value is competitive research: seeing which competitor pages win and why, then picking keywords a young site can realistically take.

The weak points are commercial rather than technical: no trial, refunds only in narrow cases, and per-plan limits that a multi-country site outgrows. Start on the smallest plan that covers your tracked keywords per market, and treat every traffic figure as an estimate. If you only need to watch your own site, the free tier is the place to start.
